Moravian choir life included a daily and weekly schedule of singing and devotional services that ran from 4 o'clock in the morning until nine o'clock at night. Even during the night, two members of each choir were assigned to pray and sing hymns every hour on behalf of the community, and watchmen patrolling Bethlehem's streets sang hymns at the turning of each hour. The singing of hymns formed an ever-present soundscape that characterized life in Moravian Bethlehem. Through song, the ordinary spaces and activities of Bethlehem became sacred.
