Clearfield (Chinklacamoose)

In the eighteenth century, the Native American settlement of Chinklacamoose, located along the Western branch of the Susquehanna river, was an important stopping place along the Great Shamokin Path connecting Native communities on the eastern and western sides of the Allegheny Plateau.

In the nineteenth century, the area was settled by loggers and mine workers. A new settler community called Clearfield was built near the site of the eighteenth-century village. Today, Clearfield remains an important stopping place and exit along Interstate 80, following much of the original contours of the Great Shamokin Path through central Pennsylvania.
